»kulturweit« (Bridging Cultures) – the international cultural volunteer programme
»kulturweit« is an international volunteer programme in the sphere of cultural relations and education policy. It is designed and coordinated by the German Commission for UNESCO and funded by the Federal Foreign Office. The programme enables young people from Ger-many aged between 18 and 26 to get involved in the field of cultural relations and education abroad for six or twelve months. These young people are sent to so-called developing coun-tries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, as well as countries in Central and Eastern Europe.
The volunteers primarily work for institutions engaged in the field of cultural relations and education policy. These include the German Academic Exchange Service, the German Archaeological Institute, Deutsche Welle, the Goethe-Institut, the Educational Exchange Ser-vice and the Federal Office of Administration – Central Agency for Schools Abroad. It is also possible to work for a UNESCO national commission.
Working at PASCH schools
Whether it be in Mexico, Kenya or Russia – many »kulturweit« volunteers work at PASCH schools and, in addition to their ideas for extra-curricular groups, sporting or cultural activ¬ities, they have one key asset: the German language and first-hand information on Germany. Due to their native-language level knowledge of German, they are indispensable at many schools: they provide assistance during German lessons, help pupils with their homework or organize special extra-curricular clubs focusing on the German language.
Requirements
Applicants to »kulturweit« must be open to other cultures and demonstrate intercultural competence. Moreover, they must be at least 18 and at most 26 during the entire duration of their service and have gained the Abitur (higher education entrance qualification) or have completed vocational training. There are places for young people who have just passed the Abitur or completed vocational training, as well as for students, graduates or young people with work experience.
